World Environment Day
World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June and is one of the United Nations’ main global platforms for encouraging awareness and action to protect the environment.
The day was established in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly following the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm. The first World Environment Day was marked in 1973, and since then it has grown into a worldwide movement involving governments, organisations, communities and individuals across more than 150 countries.
World Environment Day highlights the deep connection between environmental health and human well-being. It draws attention to major global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and unsustainable consumption and production patterns. Through this annual observance, the United Nations encourages people everywhere to reflect on how human activity impacts the natural world and to take steps to reduce environmental harm.
Each year, World Environment Day focuses on a specific theme and is hosted by a different country, helping to spotlight priority environmental issues and local leadership. Past themes have addressed topics including ecosystem restoration, plastic pollution, air pollution, nature conservation and sustainable lifestyles. These themes are designed to translate complex environmental problems into clear messages that can inspire practical action.
World Environment Day also supports the broader UN environmental agenda, including the Sustainable Development Goals and international agreements on climate, biodiversity and pollution. By bringing together policy discussions, public campaigns and grassroots initiatives, the day helps turn global commitments into action on the ground.
Ultimately, World Environment Day serves as a reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility. In a time of accelerating environmental change, it calls on individuals, communities and decision-makers alike to work together to safeguard the planet for present and future generations.
